This summer and autumn, staff and students from Macmillan Academy are joining thousands of others living and working in the Tees Valley in a project devoted to the cause of local food production and reducing food miles.

We are working in partnership with Middlesbrough Council and Dott 07 (Designs of the Times) to raise local awareness of ‘food miles’ and promote new edible ‘pocket allotments’.

Year Eight are learning about plants and the conditions in which they grow and are seeing the results of their labour as the fruit and vegetables thrive under their careful management.

We are looking forward to September 07 when a banquet for 300 will take place in the town square where our produce will be used by local and national chefs to create delicious meals.  Also in October 07, our collaborative efforts will be showcased at the Dott Festival in Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for cucumbers and cabbages adorning the planters and hanging baskets of James Cook Square and we’ll keep you updated about our own ‘Urban Garden’ is developing.
