A-Level Biology students recently visited Malham Tarn Field Centre for a two day residential course. The field centre is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and within the boundaries of the stunning National Nature Reserve and Malham Tarn itself is an unusual lime-rich upland lake, set amid a variety of habitats with a range of nationally-scarce species.

The students had the opportunity to work in a variety of habitats and field sites nationally recognized for their ecological importance as a RAMSAR site and Special Area of Conservation. Whilst there students carried out investigative work in a variety of environments including woodland and an area of fen and raised bog which is Site of Special Scientific Interest. In the evening, the students set mammal traps and then collected them the following morning to study the adaptations of the variety of mammal caught.

The visit benefited the students involved as they gained an understanding of ecological concepts and skills to help them with the practical elements of their A-Level.
