On Monday 6th July, thirty Year 7 students were fortunate enough to spend the day in the headquarters of Sage in Newcastle. Sage is a global software company which helps businesses manage such things as accounts, payrolls and human resources to mention but a few.

There was an extremely warm welcome from the staff at Sage, who worked tirelessly to provide an exciting and informative insight into this company and the roles that exist. The students started with a brief history of technology and the Sage company, which was followed by a tour of their state of the art facilities, allowing students to understand what a working environment felt like and the important range of jobs that existed within the company to make it one of the market leaders in its field.

In groups, students were then given the opportunity to develop an idea that Sage could possibly use in the future. These ideas ranged from holographic speech translators to developing apple juicers to provide a sustainable source of gas and electricity. Students then had to present their ideas to the staff and CEO of Sage, Mr Stephen Kelly in the boardroom. The students were very confident and professional in their presentations and they became very competitive, challenging each other's ideas. Stephen was very impressed with the creativity, confidence and enthusiasm of the students. The winning team, 'Boro apples' received gift vouchers and all students received gift bags.

Macmillan Academy would like to thank Sage for organising such an exciting and informative day.
