As exams and coursework deadlines come to an end, Post 16 students had the opportunity to take part in three days of activities outside their normal curriculum.

Wednesday's Ethical Issues Day offered students an opportunity to be involved in a workshop examining an issue of their choice. The workshops focused on diverse areas ranging through questions about the efficacy of punishments in society, factors affecting people's health choices, the validity of nuclear weapons, the impact of social media, the effects of gender emphasis, the role of money in society, aspects of genetic engineering and the use of drugs in sport. Lauren Taylor commented "We had a successful debate about the ideas for and against the use of capital punishment and got to see actual case studies which helped with our understanding."

On Thursday students were invited to take part in Experience Day which was organised by academy staff. Students had the option to take part in an activity that was related to their study programme or pick an experience that was based on an area of interest. Off-site events included a visit to Durham University for history students whilst students who were thinking about a career in health spent the day at Sunderland University. Molly Catterall visited The Bowes Museum as part of the art experience and she enjoyed the trip, "It was a nice day out and helped me get inspiration for my art projects." On site experiences included cooking which was very popular and useful and genetic engineering.

Next Steps Day took place on Friday which provided the students with an insight into applying to university and choosing the right courses as well as an opportunity to find out about employment opportunities in the army, the health care sector and apprenticeships in IT and business to name a few. Dr. Judith Eberhardt from Teesside University led a session on careers in psychology made the following comment about the day, "I enjoyed my visit to Macmillan Academy and interacting with the students, who were very pleasant. I hope to visit again and would be happy to give similar talks in the future."
