Students from years 8 and 9 recently took part in a bushcraft adventure weekend in the Lake District. As part of the course, the twenty-four students learned how to safely light a fire using a fire steel and a bow drill, how to purify water and how to cook on a camp fire. They also learned to make a whistle from a sycamore branch, and identified some wild edible plants such as wood sorrel. The students enjoyed a starlit evening sitting around the camp fire, cooking damper bread, before turning in for a chilly night's sleep in their tents. As they headed for home on Sunday they took with them lots of memories and a strong aroma of wood smoke!
