Year 12 Spanish enjoyed a cultural event at Sunderland University on Monday 17th June with other linguists from the area. They attended an event organised by Routes into Languages Northeast in conjunction with Sunderland University which allowed them to get a taste of Year 13 cultural study work.

The students watched the South American film: Tambien la lluvia (2011) with the famous Mexican actor, Gael Garcia Bernal. In the film, he plays a director who shoots a controversial film about Christopher Columbus, the famous conquistador, in Cochabamba, a poor area of Bolivia. At the same time, local people rise up against plans to privatize the water supply and so as an audience we see two films in one but which both cover the key theme of exploitation.

At the event, students took part in discussions about the key themes in Spanish and carried out a series of interactive activities in mixed groupings with the university lecturers, Ms Alvarez and Ms Hayes acting as support.

It was a good opportunity to work with other linguists in the area, visit the university campus and discover more about Bolivia and its social issues.

A very enjoyable time was had by all!
