Last week saw the first Royal Visit in Macmillan's history, the Academy was delighted to welcome His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, to view Outdoor Learning, Sport and Art.

Macmillan Academy is delighted put on record the successful visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, to view outdoor learning, sport and art at Macmillan Academy.

Thursday 27th September was the first Royal Visit in the Academy's history and in addition to his Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, there was also HM Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, The High Sheriff for North Yorkshire and representatives from Middlesbrough Council.

The Royal Party were incredibly impressed and complimentary about everything that they saw and seemed astonished at the breadth of opportunities that we provide for our students.

Outdoor Learning at Macmillan Academy had been a specialism from 2006 to 2012. Since the starting point in 2006 we have striven to give our students an inclusive and progressive adventure learning curriculum. We are on record as stating that "outdoor learning works, adventure and challenges inspires, it's a deep learning experience that is memorable, meaningful and motivational. It's learning that lasts a life time."

His Royal Highness visited our Physical Education and Sports department and viewed two classes of activity, as well as talking to students in our climbing centre. He spent some time in our Art Gallery with art students viewing their impressive work.

There were around 100 students involved directly or indirectly in the visit and His Royal Highness spoke to as many as he possibly could in the time he had available. The students were very impressive and did themselves and the Academy proud. All our guests at some point commented upon the students and how enthusiastic and polite they were.

When responding to His Royal Highness' questions about their experiences at the Academy they really did talk about the Academy with a huge amount of pride.
