Last Saturday morning, ten hockey players from Macmillan had the chance to meet Great Britain hockey players Alex Danson and Beth Storry.

Last Saturday morning, ten hockey players from years 9, 10 and 11 took part in a mini-tournament and training session with Great Britain hockey players Alex Danson and Beth Storry.

Both players were part of the squad which recently won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Beth, who has over a hundred caps for England and GB combined, made her international debut in 2002. Beth is rated one of the top goalkeepers in the world and plays club hockey for Reading HC.

Alex Danson is England and GB's star forward and has over 180 caps combined and scored 55 goals, including one in the bronze medal game in the Olympics. Alex made her international debut in 2001 at the age of 16 and also plays for Reading HC.

The girls from Macmillan played matches against local school and club teams as well as watching a masterclass on shooting by the GB stars. Alex and Beth also signed autographs and posed for photos with their medals and our student.

Held at Teesside University, the session was organised by Great Britain Hockey, as part of Hockey Nation's 'Give it a Go' scheme and the Premier League 4 Sport Programme.

Macmillan students were invited to the event as part of the Academy's links with Marton Furness Hockey Club. They provide junior coaching for both girls and boys on the Academy's astro turf on Friday's 6 to 7pm and on Wednesday's at Teesside University 6 to 7pm. See PE staff for more details.
