Students from Macmillan Academy, Oakfields Community College and Archibald Primary welcomed former Status Quo drummer Jeff Rich to the Academy for a Drum Masterclass.

Jeff began the day by talking to students about how he got into the music business, from performing in bands at school, playing in studios' recording music for adverts to performing and recording with famous artists touring all over the world. He joined Status Quo in 1985 and performed with them until 2000. Jeff now tours schools all over the country with his masterclass to try and inspire young people to play an instrument.

Jeff explained the history of the drums and how it has developed - from African drums to old European military drums, right through to the modern snare drum where he demonstrated a few rudiments. Students were invited to play various drums throughout the session.

The second half of the Masterclass focused on the drum kit, with Jeff demonstrating each part of his kit followed by a stunning solo performance to show what can really be accomplished. Some students were then invited to play his kit!

The session culminated in a performance by Jeff and all students on a variety of percussion instruments, a very enjoyable finale to the masterclass. The visit was a great experience for students, inspiring them and giving them a real insight into the life of a professional musician as well as demonstrating what can be achieved with true commitment, hard work and peseverance.
