Each year, the Year 13 Business students undertake a special appeal to raise money and collect donations for the Salvation Army.  Read on to find out more about the valuable work of this organisation and find out how you can help.

The aim of this appeal is two-fold: to raise donations for the Salvation Army and to help the students complete coursework for a unit of study, called 'Managing a Business Event'

The Salvation Army is the biggest social provider in this country apart from the Government and it relies almost totally on donations from their members and the public. There is a particular need at this time of the year and due to the recession; demand for their help has risen 250% from last year.

New developments in the work of the Salvation Army include liaising with government agencies to set up job centres in their Citadels and run a programme called 'Into Work'. This has come full circle as it was the founder of the Salvation Army, Major William Booth who, being concerned with the issue of massive unemployment and the resulting poverty, set up the first 'job centres' at Salvation Army venues, in the East End of London, in the 1880s.

A recent government grant in July of this year, of £2 million, awarded to the Salvation Army, will enable them to work with local agencies on the increasing problem of human trafficking.  They will use the grant to create ‘safe houses’ and follow-on support for the unfortunate people involved.

Our campaign ends on Friday 9/12 and the donations you provide (tins and toys) will be collected by the Salvation Army w/c 12/12. On the 15/12, the students involved will attend the Stockton Citadel, for the day, to help make up the food parcels and pack up the toys ready for distribution. It is physically hard work but a rewarding and humbling experience for them. We will also hand over any remaining cash as they are always short of ready money.

Major Williams of the Salvation Army Citadel, Stockton, who visited the Academy recently, sends her appreciation and thanks for what we do, each year, and says "if it wasn’t for people like you, many would go hungry over Christmas and children would wake up on Christmas morning to nothing, God bless you"

Thanks for your support
