Click to see how the Year 7 hockey team performed when they took part in a county wide under 12's tournament last week.

At 1.15pm on Wednesday 19th January a very excited Year 7 Hockey Team left Macmillan to take part in their first ever County Tournament. The girls have attended Hockey enrichment and played several friendly matches against local schools, however, little did they know that the Tournament included Yarm School, Red House and Teesside High, three very experienced hockey playing schools, where hockey is played from a young age.

The Macmillan side managed to curb their excitement and warm - up effectively in preparation for their first match against Yarm School. The game lasted 10 minutes each way. After a very nervy start Macmillan were 1-0 down, but  with lots of encouragement from Mrs Weighell and and Mrs Thompson, who arrived with family to lend moral support, the team began to improve. Esme McGhee came very close to scoring, only for Yarm to snatch a second goal in the last minute.  Only losing 2-0 against Yarm was very encouraging.

Next we played Red House School, getting off to a flying start with Esme scoring a superb individual goal, taking the ball all the way from her own half. Unfortunately Red House were shocked into action and our inexperience of penalty corners meant that Macmillan lost this game 3-1.

The final match was against Teesside High, and the girls were determined not to lose their final game!  With the team improving as the Tournament progressed the determined Macmillan side  scored two great goals in the first half, one from captain Skye Thompson and one from Esme McGhee which secured a victory.

The girls finished third in the Tournament and were very pleased with themselves.  Mrs Weighell was impressed with the improvements that the girls made and they certainly know more about the 7a-side game.

Ella Hanlon was ‘player of the Tournament’, as she made some exceptional saves and she was praised by all the other schools. The girls were a credit to the Academy and definitely a team to watch out for in the future.

Well done to all the team:
