Macmillan Academy Year 8 boys football team hosted Joseph Swan School in the 3rd round of the ESFA National Cup. This proved to be a more difficult tie than previous rounds as Joseph Swan School were well organised and had some very good players. Nonetheless the Macmillan Year 8 boys rose to the occasion and played with passion and skill.

After 12 minutes Chris Cook managed to break the deadlock, with a side foot shot from a tight angle, after a long throw in by Jason Taylor. Both sides continued to attack and produce an entertaining game. Macmillan's lead was extended in the 20th minute when good movement from a Jack Gowland corner kick found Chris Cook nipping in front of the keeper to score his second.

After the half time break, Joseph Swan School came back and asked questions of Macmillan's goalkeeper, Ross Hadfield, first with a tantalising cross to the back post that Ross clawed away to safety; and secondly with two players arriving at the back, with what seemed to be an open goal, before Ross threw himself across and blocked the shot with an outstretched right foot. Macmillan continued to battle and play good football and secured all three points when a great pass from Joe Godwin put Chris Cook through for his hat-trick, only to be denied by a defender who inadvertently turned it into his own goal.
