On Wednesday 22nd September eight Year 11 students competed in the Annual Inter-School Competition, held at Queen Elizabeth Barracks at Strensall, near York. The competition was hosted by the British Army to provide both physical and mental challenges in a competitive but enjoyable atmosphere. Kristy-Lee Matthews led the Macmillan team through a series of activities set to challenge groups of students from twenty competing schools.

After an early start, the team arrived at Queen Elizabeth Barracks to receive their instructions. The first event was early morning archery and Macmillan quickly gained a leading position. The next challenge was the aerial ropeway slide challenge, not for the faint-hearted! This activity demanded precision skills as the brave Macmillan students plummeted down an aerial ropeway whilst aiming a missile at a ground target. The team captain set a fine example by becoming this event's highest point scorer. The obstacle course followed with Luke Gappy leading the pace for the rest of the team. With some time before the next event the Macmillan team enjoyed some other activities including laser quest and paintballing.

The mountain biking and general knowledge challenge pushed the team further, but they responded well. The final event was on the laser range, where the highest score of the day was recorded by Luke Gappy, firing modified rifles during a simulated yet realistic training exercise.

The students had a fantastic day and were a credit to their year group. They were also praised by the soldiers at Queen Elizabeth Barracks for their positive attitudes.
