The Reading Champions initiative is run nationally by the National Literacy Trust to promote reading for pleasure. Macmillan Academy's Reading Champions have called their group "Premier Reads" Since November a number of Year 8 boys have been working in the Library, every Wednesday morning during tutorial time, on projects to promote reading around the Academy.

For example they have visited each Year 8 tutor group and provided them with a swap box of books and magazines so that students can trade their unwanted ones with each other. They have produced book reviews and recommendations and designed posters to promote competitions. In recognition of the groups' achievements the Trust has awarded the following students;

A Silver Award;

  • Lewis Mahoney
  • Nathan Dicicco

A Bronze Award

  • Ali Ben Tiba
  • James Campbell
  • Kristian Stevenson
  • Liam Noble
  • Robert Howes

Callum Chapman has joined this group in the last few weeks and is working towards his bronze award.

Currently "Premier Reads" are coming up with ideas and activities to promote reading through World Cup events.  These events will be taking place in the Library during June and July.  Their posters, displays and competitions will be appearing soon.
