Year 9 students have been designing key rings for the Great North Air Ambulance, as a part of a Maths and Technology cross curricular challenge.

During March Year 9 students have been busy designing key rings that could be used to raise money for the Great North Air Ambulance, as part of a Maths and Technology cross curricular challenge.

During their Design and Technology lessons the Year 9 students were given a restricted design brief and had to design a suitable key ring then draw it up using a CAD programme. In their Maths classes each group made a range of costings on their designs, so that they could work out what the key ring would cost to make, what the retail price, and what the profit would be. Each class decided on a winning team and those teams presented their prototypes to a Dragons Den. The Dragons Den members were Mr Bell (Technology) Mr Wardell (Maths) Mr McCallum (Deputy Principal).

The Dragons found a winner for each band then an over all winner. They were judged on quality of design, quality of presentation, knowledge of costing and knowledge of the charity.

The winners were:

B Band. Zoe Cockerill, Zac Kemp-Hall, Alex Fish Lock, Charlie Mc Ghee
S Band. Kaleem Majid, Sohail Akhtar, Ben Russell
G Band. Franchesca Kavenagh, Louis Slack

The overall winner was from 9s3 and their winning design is shown in the photo above.

The key rings will be made in the Technology dept and sold in the Academy for 1 after Easter, all proceeds will be presented to GNAA. The GNAA gets no government funding for the 3 helicopters that cover the 550 square miles of the North east region so they rely heavily on charitable donations such as ours.
