On Thursday 11th March Year 9 students worked together to produce TV, web, radio and print articles as part of the BBC Schools Report Day.

On Thursday 11th March, Year 9 students participated in a range of media related activities for BBC School Report day.

Students successfully produced reports across four media formats (Print/Web/TV/Radio). The groups worked in a frantic and sometimes tense, simulated news environment. Strict deadlines were set and the students had to work incredibly hard to deliver their news items on time.

The event was supported by two of our ex students, Stephanie McGovern and Natasha Maguder, both professionals from the frenzied world of television news in London.

Year 9 were presented with the 'Hot Stories' from that morning fed to them from official BBC sources. They were then given the task of researching and producing a report within two hours.

Over ninety quality productions were completed across the day with an exemplary effort from all the groups involved.

A reward trip to BBC Newcastle was offered to the twelve students who showed good teamwork and had a flair for journalism. This took place on the 16th March and three of the students have written the following comments:

While we were on our trip to BBC Newcastle we had the opportunity to see a live radio studio which was exciting! BBC Newcastle's target audience is aged 40-65 and we learnt that they had to play the right type of music and create rapport with that particular audience.

At BBC Newcastle, we met presenter Collin Brigs, he was funny and after sharing some journalistic advice he then told us something not many people know, he doesn't wear his right shoe when presenting in order to scroll down on the auto queue. Thanks for a Great visit.

We had the opportunity to present using the interactive weather board, which included all the maps, pressures and icons. In front there was a monitor showing what we were doing and where everything was. However, telling the weather is very difficult so we needed to focus on the monitor and do our actions by relying on the video. Also the weather is not scripted; the presenters need to improvise which makes it very difficult, but you can add in your personality into the presentation.
