Post 16 students have helped brighten up the exterior of a local Primary school by installing several painted murals around the school.

Recently several beautiful new murals have been installed at Newport Primary school and the children there are now enjoying seeing brilliant coloured acrylic paintings instead of a less aesthetic fence surrounding their school.

The commission was accepted by last summer's A- level Fine Art students after a request by one of our past students, Kate McIntyre who left Macmillan in 1996 and is now a primary school teacher in charge of Art and Design provision at Newport Primary School. She brought our attention a rather unsightly fence surrounding their school and wondered if we could provide murals with images that suited primary children and help create a brighter and more appealing impression for the children.

Mr McVeigh and Mr Joyce artfully arranged for the huge panels to be portable and thus be lifted in at the end of every school day. Themes for the paintings were as follows:

  • "Dragon Slaying" by Ian Hinley.
  • "Hand Printings" by Stacey Galliford.
  • "Middlesbrough Medley" by James Scott.
  • "Enchanted Forest" by Melanie Robson.
  • "Drip painting" by Jemma Chisholm
