Students who attended a three-day residential Eco-Challenge in the Lake District In January paid a visit to Newham Grange Farm last week.

The students who attended a three-day residential Eco-Challenge in the Lake District back in January are a step closer to making their pledge a reality back here at the Academy.

On Tuesday 19th May, 23 students from Macmillan visited Newham Grange Leisure Farm in Coulby Newham.  The reason for the visit was to learn more about how to keep chickens and find out about the type of housing, feed, and care chickens need, in preparation for getting a number of birds for a small farm here at Macmillan.

Whilst at the local farm, students saw a number if different rare breeds of chickens and decided on which would be suitable for Macmillan Academy.  The two breeds selected were Black Scots Dumpy and Buff Orpington.

Both were chosen because they are prolific egg layers.  The plan is to get things prepared now so that the Academy can have its own brood of chickens later in the year.  We hope to get between 6-10 birds and use their eggs in food technology and catering.
