Students from Macmillan Academy sixth form attended a Teams and Leadership course at The Outward Bound Trust centre in Howtown near Ullswater.

The purpose of the course was to improve the ability to work as a team and the responsibility of being a leader and becoming a better role model. Throughout the week they participated in many challenging tasks which tested both their mental and physical capabilities.

The students found that this course has impacted them in many ways, from physical shock to mental agility, perseverance and determination. These were all needed in order to complete the activities they embarked upon, ranging from trust exercises to orienteering to an extremely challenging two day, one night expedition.

What can I say about the overnight stay? Well it was a night of pneumatic rain and ferocious winds. It was a night of no electricity, no running water, no toilets and yet a night of unity and togetherness.

In short it was amazing!

The range of skills achieved from the course will lead on to aid them in their job and UCAS applications as well as coursework and exams. Due to the increased need for focus and timekeeping, organisation will come with ease. Working this week has formed the building blocks which open doors to team management and leadership skills which could be the difference between obtaining a successful career or not.

Looking back on this week we feel that we that we have all excelled in every activity we have taken part in due to our increase in teamwork which includes the four C's of teamwork Communication, Co-operation, Consideration and Compatibility.

At the beginning of the week we all knew of each other, but did not know each other, we now feel trustworthy and we have bonded to become one happy family.

The sixth form students who attended The Outward Bound Trust course also noticed that they changed their character, their confidence grew, their knowledge grew and they stretched themselves.

The students also gained important skills to improve their work ethic which will help them achieve the grades they want in their examinations this year.

This week has been fantastic, we all pushed ourselves and bonded together.

One quote that stuck out to us was from one of the instructors You can be wet, you can be cold, but being miserable is an option.
