All this week, staff and students have been celebrating and promoting Fairtrade. The 'green team' have been busy selling Fairtrade snacks at break and lunchtimes and had set up a 'gift shop' on Tuesday, selling cards, bags, scarves, clothing and jewellery. In addition, there was a 'Spot the Banana' competition which ran throughout the week.

Friday 6th March was the international 'Go Bananas' event, which saw people from all over the world eating Fairtrade bananas to set a new world record. To help to raise awareness of the event, Abingdon Primary School steel band came along and performed to large crowds in the dining hall and break and lunchtime. Matthew (8RWI) was impressed with the quality of the performance, saying, "The band were really good!" He explained that, "Lots of students have come along to listen and it's helped make people think more about Fairtrade."

Abingdon Headteacher, Mr Eastwood, had come along to support his students and spoke warmly of the commitment and enthusiasm of his Year 6 steel band members, saying they were "totally unfazed" by performing for a large crowd. He was also delighted to be greeted by a few familiar faces and chatted with some former students now enjoying their time at Macmillan.

On Saturday 7th from 10am-1.00pm, there is a 'Go Bananas' event being held in captain Cook's Square, Middlesbrough, to which everyone is welcome. Macmillan students have helped to organise this event and will be assisting on the day with free banana face painting, and a drama performance.
