On Thursday 12th February, the Science department celebrated 'Darwin Day' in a variety of exciting ways. The event attracted the attention of the whole school and was wide-reaching to include as many students as possible.

There were a number of Victorian visitors, including Charles Darwin himself discussing his new theory (courtesy of some excellent props and costumes and very willing teachers!) and the academy’s Library hosted a special display and gave away goodies with specially promoted books. In addition, there was a museum set up in one of the classrooms full of stuffed animals including; a baby leopard, a calf, a kid, an otter and various birds of prey and also some fossils kindly lent to us by Kirkletham Museum.

The Art department was busy designing a new plant species with Year 9 students to be entered into a competition run by Institute of Biology and during tutorial time, a quiz was held for all students with prizes for each year group. Break time was also ‘Darwin Day’ themed, with the dining hall decked out with 200th Birthday decorations, special animal shaped biscuits on sale, and a raffle. An impressive £95.14 was raised and donated to The World Land Trust, an international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save rainforest and other wildlife habitats.

Congratulations to the Darwin day prize winners below, who all received a remote controlled helicopter:

  • Ross O'Brien 7DAR
  • Matthew Morron 8 RWI
  • Abigail Bullock 9MFD
  • Zoran Arif 10STC
  • Liam Atterton 11 ATA
