Year 10 Spanish students have put aside their textbooks for their current topic and undertaken an exciting challenge which has really brought the subject to life. Their project was to promote the idea of sustainability and recycling amongst young people, and think creatively about how advice can be presented through different media.

As well as completing quizzes and reading activities, the students worked with Patricia Rodriguez (our new Spanish assistant) and researched sample videos and poster campaigns through Spanish' Friends of the Earth' and 'Greenpeace'. Following careful planning and preparation, they then decided upon their own campaign approach. Subgroups completed a photo-story, a poster campaign with 'eco quiz' and a news item, all to be delivered through the web page, the sustainability link and a news item on TV.

The advantage of this type of presentation is that other students across the globe are able to access and build on the work completed, which in turn promotes their language learning and their understanding of the theme of sustainability. Also, the website could potentially foster links between Macmillan students and international students who could respond to the items via Mrs Storey’s blog.

The same class have also been linking many of their lessons to a Spanish soap opera 'LAS HERMANAS SANCHEZ', again with the intention of promoting cross-curricular links and creating engagement and interest. The students have a notice board dedicated to the Sanchez family and keep adding to it as regular intervals.
