On Monday 29th September and the 13th October the Applied Science Y13 students visited Teesmouth Field Centre to carry out an investigation of an ecosystem.

Whilst there, they were able to develop their practical skills in the use of ecological techniques. They successfully completed a line transect across the sand dunes, looking at species diversity and measuring abiotic factors such as soil temperature and pH.

They also encountered some interesting snails (some of which amazingly seem to prefer climbing trees to marram grass!) and they investigated the distribution of lug worms on the lower and upper shore and its possible link to sand grain size.

The students are currently analysing and applying statistical tests to the data, so that they can complete a full report of their investigation.
