Macmillan footballers were delighted to retain the honours in the annual 11-a-side football tournament on Thursday 2nd October held this year at Kings Manor School.  The victory was complete with our team managing to win every match they played!

The first game was against Newlands and at the mid-way point there appeared to be little between the sides. However, after Liam Hogg, making his return after a year in exile, had given Macmillan the lead they never looked back and began to score at a canter thanks to further goals by Corey Bowen and Nathan Lowe (2). This gave the pre-tournament favourites a fantastic start to the tournament.

Kings Manor were up next and they proved to be a much more resolute outfit than Newlands, with Macmillan struggling to lift themselves. However, team captain Sam McManus held the defence together and that man Lowe popped up with the all important goal, after good work from Sam Gowland to give Macmillan a 1-0 victory.

Match number three against Ormesby was the all-important tie as both teams had two victories prior to the match, which meant whoever was victorious in this match would qualify for the final. As expected it was a tight affair with Macmillan creating the better chances. The pressure eventually told when Jordan Wales burst into the box to strike on goal, before toe poking the ball home after the goalkeeper could only parry it. Macmillan went on to double their lead when red hot Lowe mad it 2-0.

In the final Macmillan had to fight it out against the surprise team of the tournament UCA. Both teams created early chances with the UCA goalkeeper being kept very busy. Tom Crocket, alongside McManus helped to marshall the Macmillan back four and give goalkeeper Oliver Hodgson a great deal of protection. Lowe came closest when he broke clear of the UCA defence before somehow managing the blast the ball at the goalkeepers face to deny Macmillan the lead. Lowe was not to be denied though and with extra time looming he struck the ball home with just two minutes remaining. UCA had no response and thus Macmillan deservedly took the honours and retain their crown. They can now look forward to Tuesday’s ESFA cup game at home against St John’s School from Durham.
