On 22nd September, Dr Wake took 9 students (one from each tutor group in year 8) to Manchester United football ground to attend an Awards Ceremony for the 2008 British Standards Institution 'GetGreenGo' Challenge.  This is the first year the BSI has held the Awards Ceremony and it coincides with their new sustainability standards.

The competition was open to all secondary and primary schools in the country.  The entry criterion was to have made an event in your school more sustainable.  Here at Macmillan, the Year 7 Sustainability Day was made more sustainable by recycling all of the old clothes from the fashion show with the ‘Bags2School' project.  In addition, bug hotels were made out of recycled bottles and cereal boxes.

The 9 students and Dr Wake travelled by train (again to be sustainable) and everyone had a great day.  Macmillan Academy came 3rd overall, receiving a fantastic trophy made out of recycled mobile phones as well as a cheque for £250.  The students all got to go on a tour of the football stadium and try on famous footballer’s shirts, medals and shoes.  Imagine Year 8 student Rosie’s surprise at finding that she actually has the same size feet as Beckham!
