A series of sessions aimed at parents/guardians of Year 7 and 8 students are being held at the Academy on 2nd, 9th and 16th July to provide information and advice about how best to support their child’s literacy development.

The evidence base linking the home learning environment to literacy attainment is compelling and we hope to provide reassurance and support to parents who want to help their child but perhaps would benefit from speaking to literacy professionals and other parents about some of the techniques and strategies that can be used.

The sessions are designed to promote interaction between parent/guardian and child and to encourage increased motivation and literacy skills through parental involvement.  They will be run by Ms. Gill O’Reilly, Family Learning Advisor from Middlesbrough Adult Education Service and Ms. Emma Cox, Literacy Co-ordinator and Teacher of English at the Academy.

Next half-term, Ms. Cox will be running training sessions for parents/guardians which will focus more on what their children are doing in English including how they are assessed (the APP strategy) and practical ways that parents can support with English and literacy skills.

Letters have already been sent out to selected parents for the sessions for this term but if anyone else is interested in coming along, you would be most welcome.  Please feel free to contact Ms. Cox on 01642 800800 for further details or to book a place.
