Rainbow Readers

The Academy has been using a new reading programme with Year 8 students, known as 'Rainbow Readers'.  The programme has been designed to develop reading for meaning rather than decoding and uses audio CDs alongside the books.

Two teaching assistants are used to support the class teacher, which means students can benefit from working in small groups of six and be very closely monitored.  The learning can be personalised as staff will meet individual students for 'conferencing', where they can read aloud and answer questions to check understanding.

Reading Buddies

Following the success of this year's Y8 'Reading Buddies' scheme, which has run with four different cohorts throughout the year, there are plans to re-launch the scheme with Y7 students in September.  The sessions have taken place every Thursday during registration and have involved Y9 students supporting the younger students with their reading development.
