Bima Digital Day

On Thursday 10 October, ICT and Computing students from Key stages 3, 4 and 5 had the opportunity to work together and compete in a national competition entitled D-Day - Digital Day.

Remembrance Broadcast

At 11.00 o'clock on the 11th November, the Academy observed a one minute silence to mark Remembrance Day. Activities across the campus stopped as everyone watched a special broadcast.

Year 7 Pumpkin Carving

Our Year 7 students have been working on their first tutor group challenge. The students all produced a design which could be carved into a pumpkin coinciding with the Halloween theme.

Railway in Wartime

A small group of students and staff recently visited the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to produce a short film which will be used as part of the academy's Remembrance programme in November.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Year 12 Fine Art students visited The Yorkshire Sculpture Park as part of their 'A' level programme. They used the opportunity to explore the park and galleries experiencing internationally renowned artworks.

Robin Hoods Bay 2013

Year 8 geographers visited Robin Hoods Bay on the coastline in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. They learned about the geology of the coast and how this has led to its rapid erosion and weathering.

Cultural visit to Spain

In advance of the European Day of Languages, Academy students spent a week in the Cantabrian region of Spain. For a very demanding schedule they were based in Suances in an area known as ‘Green Spain’. Click to see images and read a report.

Year 6 Open Evening

Last Thursday evening prospective students and families were welcomed into the academy. Families were given the opportunity to take a look around, speak to staff and participate in activities.

GCSE Result 2013

70% of Academy students achieved 5A* - C grades including English and Maths. We were delighted with the number of students who achieved the highest grades with there being 100 A*s.

Post 16 Success

Staff and students at Macmillan Academy are celebrating another set of excellent Post 16 results. The overall pass rate was 99%, with 40% of all qualifications graded at A*-A.

Macmillan Academy musicians are being presented with a CD recording of a song that they composed whilst working with local singer/songwriter Carl Pemberton.

In the first two weeks of July all students have been involved in the "Bookend Curriculum" This has been designed to "prop up" the end of the year's normal academic curriculum.

Year 7 Challenge Week

Challenge week involves the tutor groups competing with each other in a series of challenges. Some of these are physical, others intellectual and develop the skills of collaborating and problem solving.

Year 8 Decisions Week

During Decisions Week the students looked at some of the responsible choices they need to make as citizens in the 21st Century. They were also given the chance to start work for the prestigious "John Muir" Award.

Somme & Ypres Visit 2013

A group Year 10 students and staff took part in a most successful History visit to Ypres in Belgium and to the Somme in France visit World War 1 battlefield sites.

Year 13 Leavers' Party 2013

After two years of hard work and weeks of revision for final examinations, Year 13 could finally let their hair down at The Sporting Lodge which was the venue for their Leavers' Party on Thursday 27 June.

Following a recent inspection, Ofsted have given our Academy a grading of ‘good’ and we were praised for providing an education which is ‘motivational, meaningful and memorable’.

Year 12 Spanish Film Day

Year 12 Spanish enjoyed a cultural event at Sunderland University on Monday 17th June with other linguists from the north east that allowed them to get a taste of Year 13 cultural study work.

On Wednesday 12th June, twelve Gifted and Talented students from Years 8 and 9 took part in the Teesside 'Gifted and Talented Science and Technology Challenge Day'

Coast 2 Coast 2013

During the bank holiday weekend in May, a group of students and staff undertook the annual 140 mile coast to coast charity bike ride. This year the money raised will be going to the Neonatal unit at James Cook Hospital.

Spring Concert 2013

On Tuesday 23rd April on a bright spring evening the dining hall was turned into a concert venue. Over a hundred sudents from mixed year groups entertained a large audience in the spring concert.

Student Librarian Awards

Recently nine students completed the standard level of the Student Librarian Award Scheme and five students completed the advanced level. These students attended an Awards Ceremony at Yarm School.

BTEC Dance Showcase

On the 7th May, the second Dance Showcase was held in the Greenham theatre. Students from the BTEC dance courses in years 10 and 11 joined the enrichment group for one fantastic evening of dance.

On Thursday April 18 our Year 9 cohort took part in a drama workshop by the 'An Invisible Man' organisation. Central to the performance was the idea of risk and the risks both of a positive and negative nature.

A new cutting-edge initiative began on Thursday afternoon at mima involving our Year 9 and 10 students in which they are being trained as gallery guides.

Race for Life

On Friday 19th April all Year 7 students participated in a Cancer Research UK charity event called 'Race at Your Place'. The event was organised by the Year 11 BTEC sport students.
